Poetry

Spoken Word & Page

Most of my poetry is written to be heard, not read. It lives in performance, in breath and voice and people gathered together. A few pieces are gathered here to read on the page.

aasun

The droplets don't fall, They slither down through The crevices of cracked hearts Indifference shrouding sensitivity Teetering on a needle's point A syllable tips the scale and The cascading waterfalls become A reminder of the intentions Upon which we could not deliver The droplets don't fall, They slither. The droplets don't fall They slither.

aasun means tears in Urdu.

Daughters

We are the silhouettes of our mother's dreams. Traversing terrains they could only visualize Holding their hearts in our hands like glass Gazing into the abyss ahead. We are seeds in the soil of broken dreams Rooted by responsibility Watered with love. Our sprouting carries their hope The life they wanted but never had They give what they didn't get And perhaps we will too. The world is only round after all.

I've trained in Bharatanatyam, Bollywood, and contemporary dance for over a decade, including three years at Kala Bhavan of Calgary. I tell stories through movement on stages from the Aga Khan Museum to the UK National Jubilee Arts Festival in London.

Selected highlights include Passages: Stories of Migration, first place at the Calgary Indian Folk Festival, and the theatrical production Devdaasi with Kala Bhavan of Calgary.
